Dear Parents,

            This week we will be reading I’m a Caterpillar by Jean Marzolio.  This week’s high frequency words are done, push, know, visit, and wait.  You may also want to work on the words: caterpillar, crawl, pupa, shiver, and chrysalis.  These are words that are in the story that your child may be unfamiliar with while they are reading.

            This week in phonics we will be working on r-controlled vowels: ir, er, and ur.  We will also be working with contractions.  This week’s spelling words will be challenging for the students because they will have to rely mainly on memory to spell the words, since each r-controlled has the same sound.

This week’s spelling words are:

1.      her                 2.  first                                   3.  bird                                   4.  girl

5.  burn               6.  were                                 7.  shirt                                  8.  fur

9.  hurt                10.  sir                                   11.  visit                               12. done

* Remember 11 & 12 are sight words.  They aren’t necessarily decodable.

      TIP:   buy a set of addition fact cards from the dollar store to practice at home.

      This week we will be studying the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Please ask your child when they arrive home about these historic men.  Along with learning about former president’s we will be focusing on the life cycle of the butterfly.  This will be directly connected to our story this week.
